Review: Mettalus
Sometimes you approach a new CD with few expectations. Perhaps misled by an anonymous cover, you simply play the CD and find yourself immediately renege on every doubt and uncertainty had a moment before. This, in short, is what happened with the album of the New York group Serial Obsession, here with the followup to their EP "Sexy But Useless" in 2008. The greatest strength of this work is to inability to frame and categorize their musical style, in a single pre-labeled category. Their influences range from hard rock of bands like Cheap Trick, Velvet Revolver and the rushing sounds more modern, such as U2. They are able to reprocess everything in a very special and personal sound, at times resulting in both modern and retro. The two opening tracks "All The Way" and "Edge Of The Blade" pay duty, especially in voice, to Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots. While in songs like "Dear Abby" and "Inside Out", the main impression that emerges is soft and refined, with melodies sophisticated and at the same time embracing. Another winning track is "No Surprise" in which the singer and guitarist Shawn Sugrue, once again, with all the skills in his voice, pulls out a capital performance, surprising for its versatility and remembering another great in Ian Astbury of the Cult fame. In conclusion, "Shotgun Opera" is a multifaceted album that will please many different audiences, but especially those in search of real emotions and no musical barriers whatsoever. Must-have!
